Changing out the hard drive on old laptop and going from 5-60 gb for more room. Changed out system a few years back for my daughter to use this old laptop from 98 to XP and I have the product key but cant find the cd to reinstall on new 60 harddrive. Besides cloning how can I get a copy of XP? Does MS offer something if you still have your Product key #'s?

They only offer a new disk at retail prices.

Your hard drive usually has a program to copy over the data. A ntbackup with system might help if you had someone's disk. Clean install the xp don't activate and then apply the restore.

Might try linux. Most of what people do on old computers can be done with linux I'd guess.

Try borrowing a disk, after installing use Magic jelly bean to change the key.

I didn't want to say that but I have done it before..
I think he means use magic jelly bean both before and then put it in later just in case.

This still doesn't exactly give you all that your paid for. Your original install may have had various applications and some specific drivers for your system and special applications too.

Might be possible to put old drive in a usb caddy and recover the data that way. Things like ghost, acronis and linux dd, and G4U can copy partitions. Be careful.
