Need virus/trojan advice

Toshiba / Psaa2-01t018

Specs: Windows XP
Recently we downloaded an .exe file from a site we thought was safe to run a freeware program. Probably wasn't. After we ran it, several things went wrong on the laptop.

The Task Manager seems to be running at 100% most of the time. Lots of programs won't open, and the ones that do are sluggish. Sometimes a blue screen of death comes up and forces a shutdown. Also, the microsoft music plays when the laptop boots, but after it finishes loading, the computer thinks there is no sound device installed, (even though it worked perfectly before the .exe was run)

Tried running some spyware and antivirus programs, but they open and run. Tried TrendMicro's remote scan HouseCall, but it didn't find the problem. So help me out here guys! What do I do?

blue screen of death usually gives an error message. You may want to post that.
Here's what I would do:
1-Ccleaner slim (no toolbar) remove all it finds (makes the next scans much quicker) Also click on the registry icon and remove any problems it finds (no need to back it up as Ccleaner only removes unnecessary items)
2- Malwarebytes - update and remove all it finds in the quickscan
3- Run Avast free and move all it finds to the chest.
If the problem is still not resolved, make a note where it is located and post back, thanks
There are still more methods that won't take much more time.

It should only take 1 day to remove most problems

Some HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers
