Complete ignoramus here, folks. Looking for some direction.
I am using a rudimentary radio automation program, and have the need to squirt a data train out the serial port to operate an external switcher. The program does not have a feature to do so, but it can run a script or executable file loaded into the playlist.
So now I need to write a script that tells the serial port, "send out the following data to the properly ID'd device." In a perfect world, I'd also like, "...and tell me when the device acknowledges this is done."
I'm not asking anyone to write my work for me, but can someone suggest a site, a book or a set of instructions where I can find info on how to do this. I've never had to before, but I sure do now.
Thanks very much.

Put this in programming.
Almost a few thousand ways to start.
Might start here.
http://fadshop.net/ben/serial.htm
Also seek out rs232 and comm port control in different applications such as dos, basic, perl, python, C, C+ and so on.See also set mode commands and other dos tools.
Many amature radio buffs fool with comm ports.
Comm control can also be run through other tools such as telnet on up to tcp/ip over serial.
Just too many ways to start. Pick a path and re-ask in programming maybe."Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, are in my top 10
