Need to install driver for hard drive

February 4, 2012 at 12:44:03
Specs: Windows XP
The hard drive on my Inspiron desktop seems to be (or at least was) physically damaged. It was giving an alarm-type beep and did not seem to be spinning. Plus, the computer was not booting up or recognizing the drive. I removed the drive and "played with it" and it seems ot be spinning now, but seems to have lost all data, so the PC (Windows 7) still won't load. I started the PC with the Reinstallation Disc, but the PC won't reinstall windows because it says it can't locate the driver for the hard drive. So I loaded the Drivers disc that came with it, but it still claims it can't find the right driver.

Does anyone have any idea where (either on the disc or elsewhere) I could find the driver for the hard drive?

Thank you.

The drivers for hard drives are built into Windows 7 so it's not a driver issue. You just need to replace the drive.

It's telling you it can't find the drive (not the driver) because the drive has failed, which means the system can no longer detect it. You won't get anywhere trying to restore your system with a failed hard drive installed in it.
