That depends on how you made the backup. Most backup software has a built in restore function.

yes that is true
that back up is only stored on the D drive and protected
at startup the option was to hit f10 - then two choices
a restore to original purchase state and also the option to
reformat the C drive -- so I have a copy of what was loaded
on the computer on a cd - so wasnt sure how to input that on c drive

You're going to have to explain better than that. If you format C: rather than "restore to original purchase state", the C: drive will be completely erased, is that what you want?

and yes I have done both -
you are correct --- first I restored whatever
it had to offer and after that I had other issues
with it working so I went back and reformatted
it which of course prompted me to the
erase factor ---- therefore I have
3 discs that I had copied with all the latest
programs/data ect from the hp installed backup
disc software. So I was just not sure the
procedure to copy that back onto the harddrive

If you simply copied the installed programs to disk then you may be out of luck.

Did you create the restore set using the procedure spelled out in your manual?

Can you currently boot into Windows? If so, go to Windows Disk Management. Post back with all the information about your drives.
