I need some of the expert advice out there. I have had a hard drive crash and am trying to gather information off of old drives. I have a new hard drive that I intend to install XP Pro SP2 from scratch. Once that is installed, I want to connect other hard drives and gather older data. I am worried that if I add another hard drive that has XP Pro on it, I will confuse the system and it may use files from both xp installations and corrupt the new set up.
I just wanted some advice before I go through the entire process just to mess it up when adding another drive that used to be the main boot drive.

Then physically disconnect the old drive while installing on the new one. Reinstall with correct jumpers and have access to your data.
You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users

In other words, install XP with only one drive connected, once XP is installed, connect another drive which is jumpered as a slave. When you boot up, you then have access to your old info. Your old drive will not try to find the previous XP install, because it is a slave.

Whether it is slave or master makes no difference. When the new installation is booted it will treat the old installation just like a any other data folder, completely ignoring it as far thinking it is an operating system.
