My mom had lots of spyware and adware on her PC that I have not been able to get rid of in the past. Yesterday I went over and and installed AVast Anti-virus which was recommended by a friend. Restarted the PC and it did a scan before Windows started up. It found a lot of adware.
Windows started up after the scan and all was fine for a while. Now whenever I open IE all the buttons and toolbars are gone from the top. You will see them for a second and they go away and it is just a big gray box.
I have a feeling that I accidently deleted some of the files where the adware was found instead of moving them. I'm not sure. I also went to Add/Remove programs and deleted some stuff she wasn't using (CometCursor, screensaver stuff she DL off net, ect..).
I tried downloading IE again but everytime it gives me an error message saying that it couldn't continue because there is another application going thru the installation process and that I need to reboot. I rebooted the PC and same message - there is nothing else running tho.
I don't know what I did and I can not find an answer anywhere. I noticed two files were missing from IE in the system information (iecont.dll and iecontlc.dll) but I came home and it says the same thing on my PC and I am not having any problems so I'm thinking that's not it.
Anyways, thanks for reading this far. If you can help me or give me any suggestions I would really appreciate it.
Thanks.

Yes you can create system restore point but for what? You have to understand that any AV tools will not be able to clean infected files found in the System Volume Info folder of System Restore. We usually advise people to turn off System Restore, run the AV tool, and finally turn back on SR.

And, maybe you want this:
How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP

I just didn't know if a system restore would fix my IE problem. Because I don't know what I did to cause it I don't know how to fix it. If I would restore it back a few days wouldn't IE go back to how it was before I messed things up??
Forgive me if I am being naive - I really do know a lot about computers but I guess not as much as I THOUGH I did.
Thanks.

Brandi - when trying to clean system of spyware and viri, it is always best to do so in Safe Mode, as some files just re-infect in Normal Mode. Run it a couple of times.
Rule #1 Good computers don't go down.
Rule #2 There is no such thing as a good computer.

Brandi,
Please stay with one thread. Do not post another identical thread in the Security forum. Thank you.

Sorry - I just wanted to get as many answers as I could. I'm not really following some of the help that I'm getting here (no offence - it's just ME!)
I just want to fix my mom's computer and I don't know why all the toolbars and address bar and even File, Tools, View on top are gone now.

Comet Cursor is one of the most insidious examples of spyware. When you start uninstalling this kind of spyware, they will permanently damage your internet ability. Web Hancer is another one of these.
I think you are wasting alot of time here and really would be better served by reformatting and starting over, this time with Spywareblaster and Spybot onboard, and a real paid for antivirus program like Nod 32, because your mom needs some serious help, to avoid a recurrence.

But I do agree with Rich in one way, it would be easier to start over, put in the HP recovery disk and follow instructions. Some Hp have a recovery partition, go to hp.com and look up the model number from the computer to see how that particular model does recovery.
If the computer didn't come with the sp2 you will want to download the sp2 network install and save it to a cd then install it immediately after you do a recovery before you get on the net. You will also want to save the file you downloaded for the Avast antivirus to reinstall it or use AVG free, I've been using it for a couple of years without any problems. Here's a list of stuff you might want to save or export to a cd before doing a recovery.
1.sp2 update (if it wasn't there when computer was new)
2.antivirus install if you downloaded it.
3.export bookmarks from IE
4.export address book and save messages you want to keep on outlook express
5.any pictures
6.any projects from programs like works, office, creata card, etc.
7.any songs (mp3,wma)
8.anything in my documents that you want to keep.
9.you might want to download Firefox and have her try it. It seems to have less of a problem being hit with adware/spyware. FF is just about like IE to use.

Hi Brandi,
Before trying a recovery disk you should try re-registering the IE DLL's.
1. To do this click Start / Run
2. Type CMD and hit enter
3. This will bring up a Dos window
4. Type the following commands to re-register the IE files5. regsvr32 shdocvw.dll (hit enter)
6. regsvr32 browseui.dll (hit enter)
7. regsvr32 urlmon.dll (hit enter)
8. regsvr32 mshtml.dll (hit enter)
The files listed above are the core components for IE so re-registering them should bring back the buttons in IE. If it doesn't I would try reinstalling IE from Add/Remove programs / Windows Components in Control Panel.
Hope this helps,
Joe

Domass, not necessarily. I don't doubt freebie AV programs are fine for experienced users, but not for our "newbie" friends. They cannot tell whether it is working or not...and it gives them a false sense of security.
Please remember Nod32 has been the winner in all Windows OS in the VB100 tests for "virus in the wild" for the last 17 years. Up until last year, Avg never passed for any OS, and last year passed only for XP so it had failed for 98, Me and Windows 2000.Since then it has passed. But that is a slim line and Avast the same way. How can you equate the two programs?
