Hello. I need some help. i bought a new HDD 160 gb and i have installed on it Windows Xp Prof. SP2 and some other programs. Now i want to learn if is any way to SAVE this Fresh Install of XP and programs in order that in one day that my PC will be corrupted i can you this installation. How can it be done? Help please. Thanks

I have been using Ghost 2003 to make backup images of the primary partition to a second partition. The images can also be written to DVDs and the program allows you to write images across network or to an external USB drive.
I recently begain putting a second drive in my computers and cloning the original drive using Ghost 2003 to the second drive. It's much faster and if my original drive crashes, I have a backup drive ready to run.

You need to purchase disk imaging software. Here is link to ten best review: http://disk-imaging-software-review...

Sorry enton, I am not an expert, but have you heard of the System Restore feature in Windows XP? You can initiate a snapshot, sort of, by going to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, then System Restore and then Create a System Restore point. Just follow the On-Screen instructions.

For what its worth here is my input.
I agree Image the drive. I use Ghost 2003, I do backup to another partition, but obviously, its a good idea to do this to DVD.
However, without wishing to offend Doctor1954, ghosting with 2003 to usb is very slow. There are lots of tweaks for this at http://radified.com/cgi-bin/YaBB/Ya...
If he has any good tips to make it faster please let me know.
Ghost 9 & 10 have better usb support, but don't get good reviews.
I ghost, to my other partition & then copy to my usb drive. I have never had to try to restore from it, though.Acronis True image is supposed to be good.
As for system restore, if you go to http://www.angelfire.com/wizard2/hk... System snapshot can create a restore point on boot up.

No offense taken wrt Ghost 2003 and USB ... it's like watching paint dry and Ghost to DVD means feeding the DVD burner.
Ghost to another partition is fast but I don't think enton's HDD is set up that way though it could be with Partition Magic.
I tried Acronis True Image but, despite its "gold" rating in the article cited above, couldn't get it to work well.
I still find cloning the drive to another using Ghost 2003 to be the best backup plan that I've used.

Ghost 2003 is the best. Maybe get a friend to help you with what im going to suggest. Ok make like a 6 Gig partition. I prefer to change the drive letter to D in Computer management. Then insall Ghost 2003 probaly can be found on ebay. But 2003 is the best even though its older evrsion. After the install make the backup to the D partition. If you have a spare Harddrive use it instead of a partition because if the drive dies so doese your backup. Also if you have a DVD Burner you can burn the image to DVD. I prefer a DVD burner over a CD burner because it will take more CD'S DVD'S are better. Then but the Backup DVD in a safe place.

Forgot to add this. I don't use system restore. It takes up alot of space on the drive and iver never had luck restoreing. They always fail. When i said to get a friend. I meant a friend that knows about computers. I would help you if i lived near you for free but i dought we live near each other.

Stay away from System Restore. For starters it ONLY restores your OS. Not any of the apps you have installed. As mentioned numerous times above, IMAGE the drive. That copies everything on the drive to another file (or DVD). This file is on another partition, another hard drive or DVD. I personally use Drive Image. It has been bought by Norton so is not available now. Never used Ghost as I liked DI better so stayed with it. Image the drive after you have made all the installs and tweaks that you want and if you have to restore, it takes 20 minutes and you are back running again. I also back up my data seperatly to another drive so that will have to be reloaded after a restore.

Ghost is good to use, but for the past year I've been using Acronis True Image. You can find it at most stores or online. It's really simple and works, since I use it to image and restore clients of mine.
