I can't play dvd's anymore and I don't know why.
I have an Nvidia GeForce4 Ti 4400 (128 meg i think but might be 256). I have two DVD drives.
I get a dialogue box that says "windows media palyer cannot play DVD video. Open Display in c ontrol and then lower your screen resolution and color quality settings. To View the DVD troubleshooter, click more information."
I tried changing the resolution and the color depth but it doesn't help. I'm positive my computer used to play DVDs. I don't know what's changed since then - haven't watched in a while.
I ran windows update and I updated my media player to v10 and I did all the other critical updates. I also tried watching in real player (which I hate and don't want to use) but that doesn't work etiher. There's no dialogue box that pops up, I hear sound but I see no video. Doesn't matter commercial dvd's or bootleg or whatever.
Can anyone help - this really sucks.

What is the dvds' status in My Computer(double left click) and devices with removeable storage report and then what are the drives status in the device manager? Have you tried disconnecting one of the dvd drives, preferably the slave one? Then try playing a dvd.

I'm not sure what you mean about the double left for the device report. If I right click I can get something about the status. It says Device Status: This device is working properly for both drives.
It's the same BS with both drives.
I didn't try disconnecting them because that is such a pain to open the comptuer and my hardware configuration has not changed since DVDs used to play.
I have tried two microsoft drivers, the latest nvidia driver, and the latest manufacturer driver. My exact model card is Asus A7V266-C. I can't imagine what the problem is here but it's getting really annoying. I have some european dvd' sthat I really want to watch and my only option is the computer because of the region code bs.
Any other ideas? I don't get it.

According to WMP10's help file:
"To play DVDs, you must have a DVD-ROM drive and a software or hardware DVD decoder installed on your computer. If you do not have a compatible DVD decoder installed, DVD-related commands, options, and controls do not appear in the Player and you cannot play DVDs. By default, Windows does not include a DVD decoder."
If you have not already downloaded a codec or installed one separately, you won't have the ability to play DVD's.

Which codec should I install? Ican't believe the factory drivers don't include it. They must have gotten deleted because I didn't have a problem before. I also can't believe my card doesn't have a hardware decoder!

Okay,my dvd player came with Cyberlink Power DVD software.Which one do you have?
I have played many movies with all of the items in response 3 installed. These have all the codecs.

The double left click for My Computer opens it. I wanted you to check what the devices with removable storage status is. You should see a cdrom, dvd or dvd-rw listed. Sometimes there can be a problem here. I just wanted to make sure everything is working and is identified correctly. Now that I know what the problem is go here and get the codecs needed to play your European dvds;

Hi brian993.
You say that you have some European DVDs that you would like to watch, I think that is what you said.
Are you aware of the Regional Codes application. You may not be able to watch those DVDs. I Will not go too deep into this application.
Have you tried a local movie from a DVD rental shop to see if that works?
Just a thought.

You probably need to update your DVD software so that it will work under Windows XP. Otherwise, your DVD software won't work under Media Player, either.
Go to the Web site of your DVD player's manufacturer and look for a Windows XP patch or upgrade.
