to any of you guys who has a good running copy of xp pro installed, i would appreciate it if you could email me a copy of your hal.dll file found in c:windows\system32 folder. i am doing a dual boot of win me and win xp and it says the file is missing or corrupt. i checked the folder and the file wasnt there. so please, if you could email me a copy i would really appriciate it.

This is the third time i have installed xp and i have searched the cd, hal.dll is nowhere to be found. Can someone please send me hal.dll from your system32 folder. Much appreciated.

Run 'expand hal.dl_ c:\winnt\system32' on the i386 directory of your XP cd.
But why does the f**** file corrupt every once in a while?

I got the same error message. However, if you try to install it again, it should go away. (At least on my system it did)

I need this file too
here in germany nobody is able to help me ;(
im want do update winme with xp an the error is "there is no, or a bad hal.dll in win-root\system32...install it!" please help me

Just had the same error. I had two hard disks, ME on disk 0, XP on disk 1. Then I installed Linux in unallocated space on disk 1. On reboot, ME and Linux start just fine. When I tried to boot into XP I got the hal.dll error.
I'm thinking XP does something "interesting" to the boot sector. Perhaps having something to do with the way ntldr executes.
Anybody want to provide me with details of their hardware and file system configuration? I can look into this a little further.

Just had the same problem. I have 3 Operating Systems installed (WinXP Pro, WinME, Win2000 Server). When I started Win2000 and ran CHKDSK all the System32 files were corrupted. CHKDSK repaired them all. So my advice: install an OS that can handle NTFS and run CHKDSK.
Good luck

I have the hal.dll file but when I try to copy it using the system recovery it says "access is denied"!
