I am a home user. I trade stocks on-line using dynamic quotes, surf the web, do general research, e-mail, some word processing. I am not a student but my daughter will be a college student in less than two years. I am buying a Dell 8200. Do I need XP Home Edition or XP Pro?
XP Home should suffice but not knowing the universities networking requirments I can't say it will. I would contact the univeristy and ask them if XP Home is sufficent for your daughters needs. XP Pro does have more advanced networking capabilities than XP Home, that is really the major difference.

I would without a doubt go for the pro version. With student pricing you should be able to get it for about the same price as xp home.
