Hi, could you help me fix this problem with
NortonAntivirus2003.
And here it is the problem:
Suddenly after a normal shutdown I saw that the icon in the taskbar is in disabled mode. I right-clicked on it but all the menus were
greyed except the "Open NortonAntivirus". I clicked on it but NAV didn't load.
So obviously NAV is not protecting me right now.

I try to reinstall it but it's not helping. After the restart the problem is the same.

I doubt this is caused by a virus, because this had happened to me
on fresh installed windows

Ugh... Norton. Enough said.

It is a well-known and documented fact that Norton products are not very compatible with a lot of standard applications out there that we use. It is also a known fact that with every new release of NAV they fix a few things and end up breaking about a dozen more. :/

If this is on a clean install of XP, with no other programs running or loaded -- it is an odd occurance because that generally doesn't happen until something else is installed.

I personally can't stand Norton... for many reasons. In tests I have done it has missed quite a few viruses I have 'inserted' into my system... and also am against their philosophy that virus definistion updates should be a yearly subscription based thing, though others have followed suit with doing that now as well. I wouldn't be surprised if some viruses were actually created in these Anti-Virus companies to ensure they have business...afterall, they seem to be ahead of some of the viruses out there and come out with patches or definitions before the virus even infects a large part of the industry. :/

Anyways.. I would suggest checking their website for incompatibilities with any software you may have installed. Or, try applications one at a time to see which one breaks NAV...or rather... NAV doesn't think you should have on your system.

I've had problems with Norton 2003 Professional
on both computers here at home. Even couldn't
uninstall via Add/Remove Programs so I had
to download a special utility to do it.
No problems with the Norton 2003 regular version though. Just Pro. And I have Windows XP too.

I believe you need to undertake a full system scan prior to enabling features and downloading updates.

Even though it's a fresh install, some bad things could have snuck in.

You may have a virus or trojan or worm or adware or some other sort of malware.

Run an AV scan (if you can't use NAV, maybe you can use one of the free online ones like house call), and download AdAware and Spybot, install them, update them, and run them. Delete anything that looks suspicious. Some advise deleting
everything because it's all reversible. Also get Spyblaster which keeps a list of bad stuff on your computer and blocks them from being installed (theoretically). Be sure your independent (not MS’s) firewall is enabled.

Spybot

AdAware

I used to think McAfee was good, even though their tech support is awful. But their Security Center v.6 is full of problems. Won't go into them here, but DON't buy it. Also don't follow their advice and update any version of virusscan 7 to 7.03. It's full of problems too. Never again will I buy something from McAfee.

I recommend RAV!..and in response to RJCE's "I wouldn't be surprised if some viruses were actually created in these Anti-Virus companies to ensure they have business...afterall".Unethical Job Security Practises may not be morally right but in our society it is unfortunately not illegal :~(

There are many that are good,
but it is sensible to work out which one is best for you on your box.

Some that perform their job well, may not suit you or be fully compatible and vice versa. Often you need to test run a few of the AV programs to find out; and it is worth the effort.

NAV can't be uninstalled manually. The NAV install cd has to be used, it has an uninstall function.

I got hacked really well one time and Norton didn't detect any of them. I heard somewhere that the success rate with them is only like 60%.

We have an older version of NAV on our XP, but we only run it once in a great while. I really haven't needed it since I got a good firewall. I downloaded a stealth firewall which doesn't register your computer as being on the net. No problems ever since. I would highly recommend Agnitum Outpost firewall from www.agnitum.com.

I can't recall if the uninstall command in the NAV cd is obvious when you open it. I do recall that when I clicked "install" it checked the comp for previous versions and when it found it, asked if I wanted to uninstall it and I clicked "yes".

www.free-av.com

it looks very good. no "resource eater" and detects alot of viruses. I haven't the chance to test it so please if you had tell me the results ;)

and Kaspersky Antivirus
and Panda AV

I have experienced problems with AVG too?I tested it on a friend's machine/ It detected only 14/22 viruses. NAV-20/22; Kaspersky 21/22, but it was 6-7 months ago
