Specs: Windows XP, 512
My XP installation disc broke into pieces. how can I get a replacement?
I do have a valid product code.

As I stated above, you need the same type of CD. In your case OEM or retail CDs will work. You can borrow one from someone that has one or you can risk downloading from torrents.

The disk needs to say WinXP 32 bit on the label. Recovery disks will state that is what they are.

You are also allowed to make one archived copy of your disk to protect against damage, as you had happen.

You may need to download drivers for your hardware.

Copying is legal as long as you only use your installation key on one computer at a time. You stated you had installed your version on three computers. Did you need to type in the installation key in order to proceed? If so, did you eventually register all three?

What TYPE of disk did you have? There are SLP recovery disks from the manufacturer, OEM full versions and retail full versions. Also possible but unlikely that you have the 64 bit version of WinXP.

For the SLP type you may be able to buy a replacement set for $25/50. or if you know someone with a very similar model computer you may be able to borrow/burn a copy to use. For retail, you can borrow a CD from someone and burn a copy.

Ebay might have some too, especially if you don't need the key.

How did it manage to get broken into several pieces? That's pretty hard to do.

If retail version (full installation) quite possibly M$ will replace it for not much - especially if you still have the disk (albeit in pieces?). There are code numbers on a genuine disk that M$ will ask for, and then source a disk.

If OEM then contact the vendor for your laptop - or Computer manufacturer directly.

You may find OEM disks at clearance houses, computer fairs too. Just look for one that has a similar style "key" to yours. Most kit comes with OEM installation, and the key that comes with them will work "only" with similar OEM disks. OEM keys include the letters OEM in the key.

At a computer fair etc. you may find "badged" disks; which usually means they only work with that brand of kit - Dell badged for Dell kit and so on. If it's not badged... good chance it will work with most kit...

Where are you situated?

OtH - what is an SLP disk? Not familiar with that term...

Borrow an XP disc, the 25 digit code is what is important, anyone's XP disc will work provided it is just XP and not "dell or compaq recovery" type disks.

To err is human but to really screw things up, you need a computer!

How on earth did your disk break into pieces? I tried breaking a CD up once and it was darned near impossible.

If the key is an OEM then the disk used must be an OEM (have that OEM in the disk key required.) If the key does not have OEM in it then likely any standard XP disk will work… You cannot use one style/type of key with a different style/type of disk…

Most kit since W2K arrived as OEM installed; but not necessarily bios-locked for the disk it arrived with; i.e. the OEM disk would likely work with any brand of computer. M$ later stopped that back door as they were losing money - when people bought those bios-locked etc disks at fairs/clearance outlets and installed them on kit other than say Dell...

And if the OEM disk is badged (bios tweaked/locked) to work only on say a Dell, or Compaq, HP etc… - whichever it is badged by - then that OEM disk won't accept your OEM key (if it's not a one issued by Dell or Compaq, HP accordingly…); nor likely will it actually install properly. You can't "usually" use a Dell OEM key on a Compaq OEM disk and so on… A badged disk "usually" requires a key from whomever badged that OEM disk...

A non badged OEM disk will "usually" accept a non badged OEM key - from whom/wherever…

Again… you cannot "usually" mix different styles/types of keys and disks… If I can find the M$ reference to this issue I will post it here… And there are other similar articles/references about this - somewhere out there…

As regards breaking a disk… have to echo Derek here.. I find them almost indestructible; unless one treads on them in the right (wrong) way, or hits them with a hammer or similar?

I searched Ebay but got confused by the terminology. (newbie)
It must be a retail version
It's not 64 bit
or preinstalled
and not badged. We reinstalled it on several brand PCs
Since I have a valid product key, someone said
any installation cd would work.
So far you guys have given me several ideas to try which is
a good thing.
How did it break? I noticed a small crack starting from
the center hole. Put it in the tray. It popped back out in
at least 20-30 various size pieces. :(,

mmm XP generally was shipped (installed) - OEM or not - as 32 bit. 64 bit was around a little later and aimed at a specific pro market…

Any retail copy of XP will (ought to) work with your key. It will not work a recovery disk… And as you appear to have a retail key (no OEM in the key details?) it will "only" work with a retail disk (not an OEM). And as I understand… a Home key will not work with Pro disk, and visa-versa...

If you're in the UK… we may be able to help you get a disk… And as I suggested earlier - also have a word with M$. - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326246

If you still have the pieces - enough to put it together and read the details on the label… you may be able to find the info M$ would normally ask for when asking for a replacement disk… It's usually a few numbers or a mix of letters and numbers as I recall…

What version of XP do/did you have - Home or Pro…?

Are you in the UK?
