my taskbar does not work!!!

my taskbar does not work, when i try to put my mouse over the taskbar to use the start menu or quick launch buttons i get a hourglass symbol. the windows key does not even work. everything else works on the desktop. i can watck movies or open documents going through the desktop but the taskbar always remains busy(hourglass) and i cant access it. i need help i have a lot of data and n place to send it to. HELP PLEASE!!!!

run your antivirus s/ware, see if that solves it. If not, whack yur Xp cd in to boot to, and repair yur current install, no data will be lost.

Look at the system processes in the task manager if there are processes going through the roof. Try to stop that process and see what it does.

did and i cant close them. system idle process is the one the takes us a lot 96-99 percent most of the time.

after about 5 minutes the welcome sound will sound and i can run the task manager. then in anouther 5 minutes if i end the svchost.exc local service process i can access the taskbar. i dont know what svchost is. can anyone help.

svchost loads certain porgrams at start up. This exact same thing happend to me. To fix it i had to reformat the hard drive but after word when the system was working i found out the stick of 256mb ram i added to the orgional 128mb my computer came with when i upgraded to xp had died. This left the system with just enugh ram to run windows xp. It could be that some of your ram has also faild and thats why the system gets stuck. I would check to see how much ram the computer says you have.
Summary: My IEv6 does not work at all. Netscape/Firefox both do but it remains veru inconvenient for auto updates etc. How the hell do I get it to work? I suspect it is in the registry that the problem exists ...
