My sound doesn't work at all, and when I go to the sound icon at the bottom theres just an "x" and it says no audio output device installed. This doesn't make sense because when I go to devices, its says my "realtek high definition audio" is working properly.

I don't know why my sound just stopped working. Help please!

Start, RUN, then type
dxdiag
That has buttons for testing Audio or Video, etc.

Start, Run, then type
devmgmt.msc
Check Device Manager for discrepancies.

Did this suddenly happen? One time a while ago I wasn't getting any audio, even though my hardware was fine and my computer settings said it should've been. I did a system restore to the last time it worked and it fixed it. I obviously I changed something and didn't realize it. Try that if you have checked your speakers and everything are OK. Sometimes other programs can takeover your systems sound, like the god-awful Real Player, for example.

I just downloaded itunes and i think Quicktime, and I do have realplayer on my computer too. Is that what made my sound stop working?
I'm not very computer savvy, how do you do a system restore?

Try System Restore back to a date when all was good.
It will also remove programs that were installed after the date you select.
Start >All Programs >Accessories >System Tools
When in SR, read what to do. If unsure, click "Cancel" button.

Using System Restore too many times can cause
more harm than good. After doing a restore
that does not fix a problem, then UNDO the
Restoration, and try another restore point, or
just do the UNDO.
