I just got a Radeon 9800 pro and I plugged it in and about 4 hours after the computer turned itself off and wouldn’t turn back on so I went to my local computer shop thinking my (300w) PSU had blown and I got new PSU (450w). I plugged the 450w PSU in and I started my computer, it got to the desktop then the computer turned itself off and wouldn’t turn back on again So I found an old 100w PSU and my old graphics card and put them in my computer and it started up no problem so I took the 100w psu out and put my 450w psu in and it started up so I took out my old graphics card and put my Radeon 9800 pro in, about 40mins after the computer turned itself off and wouldn’t turn back on again! So I put my old graphics card back in and after awhile it turned itself of again. So I put the 300w PSU back in that I had in the first place but it didn’t start up so I put the 100w PSU in and my old graphics and it starts up but I haven’t tryed to leave it on to see if it turns itself off.
if someone can help me that would be great
Thanks

Just a guess...overheating. Most machines are protected with thermal overload. The machine gets too hot, it will shut down and not start again until it cools. Make sure the cooling fan(s) are working. Also keep in mind that it is possible to increase the workload of the CPU tothe point where you will need an additional CPU fan.
When the system is on, put your finger on the CPU. It should not be hot enough to make you feel uncomfortable.

I wonder how can he put his finger on the cpu with the fan running? and if theres no fan .. well we got a problem there ! ..
:)))))))))))) aha

Put your finger on the CPU ????
Just to comment:
Static electricity from your body can ruin the
electronic components in computers.

Wow, now that's some troubleshooting there. Ok, from what it sounds like, the 300w psu might have gone bad. And during the process, might have taken something out with it, or damaged something in the process, via your motherboead, the actual connection to the motherborad, lan card, agp slot, some pci slot, modem, something like that.
Take everything out of the comp, besides the CPU, RAM and vid card, and see if it does it then. Leave it on for a while and see if it does it. If it does, then it might be a heating problem or when the 300w psu went bad, it might have damamged the agp slot along the way.
Are you overclocking anything?? If so, reset everything back to there defaults.

I forgot to mention in:

Put things back in one at a time (if it does not do it) until it does it again, then you know where the sorce of your problem is.
If you have onboard vid, use that instead of the agp slot, and see what that does too.

i havent overclocked anything but i have got it to turned on by puttin a 100w psu in and my old graphics card i am runing it atm and it hasnt cut out (yet!) i have posted this problem somewhere else and som1 said that i just need a new fan that will keep it cool enough to run everything in my computer, do i just need a fan that will run a 9800 pro and a 450mhz PSU
Thank 4 the posts

u dont have to touch the CPU , but u can touch the heatsink of the CPU by u r fingers & notice whether the heatsink is hot , besides the working fan, & also check the fan of ur Power supply Unit that may also cause in ur overheating of transistors , capacitors & transformers in ur Power unit . besides this testing u also have to check the overheating of u r AGP card , by touching the cards main chipset or heatsink while it is on , or after 40 mins . Ram may not be having any problem , as it is starting the comp. perfectly for 40 mins as u said .just try out things & test if cpu fine is working fine or u r having some overheating problem with u r powerunit & AGP card also . hope this diagnose helps u .

well i have it workin now just with a 100w PSU and my old graphics card just when i put the 450w PSU it doesnt do anything now i dont want to try my radeon 9800 pro with a 100w PSU!, do u think both the PSU were f***ed? or shud i get a new fan for the CPU coz it ant handle running 3 hard drives a 9800 pro 1g ram ect:
Thanks 4 the posts!

The 100w will run the 3hdd and the 450w will not?? I think there is more than just a cooling issue here.
