Whenever I try to open my network places, I get an error that says "An unhandled win32 exception occured in explorer.exe [3492]". Nothing else that I have found causes this problem, and I have done all basic troubleshooting that I can think of (restart, scans, disable stuff, etc.).
I believe this may have something to do with installing Visual Studio 2005 since every time this happens, the error message pops up in the Visual Studio Just-In-Time-Debugger. I don't remember it doing that before I installed Visual Studio. I would hate to uninstall that though because it takes so long to install and I am doing a lot of work with it right now.

I agree. It would appear that Visual Studio changed something that it shouldn't have. Unfortunately, there's a chance that an uninstall might not fix it. Uninstalls do not always clean up everything that an install does.
