OS: win xp
CPU/Ram: don't know.
Product: dell inspiron
Comment:

My mouse usually at the same time every day for the past couple of days suddenly closes out firefox, goes to start and starts opening up programs like run and network settings and things like that. Usually if I keep hitting ESC it'll stop after a few minutes.

I've run several different virus scanners and nothing came up.

I don't have control over the mouse at all when this occurs.
Can someone please tell me how to make this stop?

I run WinXP on a Dell Inspiron. It's a laptop. Service pack 3.

Does this happen for all accounts? Have you tried a new mouse?

Go to Church, get some Holy Water, sprinkle it on the touch pad as you shout "I beseech thee get out, I beseech thee, get out" over and over again. ;)

Seriously, I recently had a laptop in the shop with a similar problem and it turned out to be the on-board mouse/keyboard controller. Cleaning the contacts helped, but did not completely stop this from happening. There is also a setting in the Touch pad options that says something like 'Automatically move cursor to highlighted area" or something similar. Unchecking that box also helped.

hope this helps.

Have you tried uninstalling the Synpenh touch-pad program along with the drivers and then download a new copy from Dell's support website? You should because it may just be a driver issue. Also, here is a Dell knowledge base article concerning the Inspiron touch-pad not working properly and a possible fix for it. The model of the inspiron is immaterial as they all use the same touch-pad and drivers.

Worst-case solution... use a plug-in usb rodent (and preferably an optical - as they have no privates that regularly require cleaning...).
