My icons have all changed to .lnk?

April 11, 2005 at 16:31:50
Specs: XP Pro + SP2, .

Hi, I've encountered a bit of a problem with one of my systems.

I booted it up as normal, logged in and Ad-Watch loaded up as usual and kept displaying "Registry modification detected" with the choice of Allow or Block. There were 43 modifications alltogether. I just clicked automatic (All) and Block because I had no idea which programs were trying to access the registry.

Then, nothing seemed to open, so I rebooted and now all of my desktop icons and those in the start/programs menu are called 'whatever the programs called'.lnk
Nothing runs?? none of the *.exe programs will run when I go my computer->C:\->whatever program and try to run them directly. All of the icons seem to have been replaced by the kind that windows uses when it doesn't know what a file is???

I have an up-to-date Panda Platinum Internet Security 2004, Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE professional (also up-to-date) and I am behind a hardware firewall/antivirus router.

Is this some kind of virus or hack attempt?

How can I fix it?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Just tried that. Unfortunately, when I double-click the xp_exe_fix.reg file windows doesn't seem to know what to do with it, instead of asking if I want to merge it, it just asks me what program should be used to open it. I can open it in notepad but when I try to run regetit, that won't open either.

I have tried a system restore in safe mode and that made no difference either.

Thanks for the suggestion though!

Shot in the dark- Does the program " Ad-Watch: have a restore function? It appears that is what caused the problem.

I've also looked down that avenue. none of the programs will open including ad-aware/ad-watch in either normal or safe-mode

Originally I was thinking of running norton windoctor (shot in the dark) to see if that could sort it out, but that's inaccessible too?

I might try and see if I can add a few file associations in one-by-one and see where that gets me.

Cheers for the time so far!

Thanks, but i've fixed it now!, can't believe how stupid I was!!

For the benefit of others:
When double clicking the xp_exe_fix.reg file, windows asks what to use to open it. Go to select from list, then browse and find C:\Windows\regedit.exe, select it and click ok, then double click xp_exe_fix.reg again and it'll ask you if you want to add the info to the registry. Click yes and reboot your computer. You should notice that by going Start->my computer->C:\ and opening any one of the folders, all of the programs appear normal again and will function correctly.

If your desktop icons still have the *.lnk extension, run the linkfile_fix.reg by double clicking it, then reboot again. make sure everything seems back to normal and your all done!

the specific locations for the files:

http://www.doughknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_exe_fix.zip

http://www.doughknox.com/xp/fileassoc/linkfile_fix.zip

Note: if winzip/winrar or whatever isn't working on your machine, either extract the files on another computer or associate the zip files with the appropriate program exe (winzip/winrar) as done for the xp_exe_fix.reg file.
