My Hard Disk Wont Work in Win XP

I have recently upgraded my pc to Windows XP. When I installed it I got drivers for hardware that was not working, and everything seemed fine, except my secondary hard disk. My primary hard disk is a 6GB Fujitsu which is partitioned into 3 x 2GB drives, and is on a fat32 file system on Windows XP - Its works fine. My secondary hard disk is a 30GB IBM hard disk that shows up in the "My Computer" section, but when you try to open it, it says, "The disk in Drive D is not formatted, do you want to format it now?" - But it worked brilliantly in windows 98 and has over 20GB of VITAL files and information on it, so there is no way I can format it. It is also on a Fat32 file system. What can I do to get it to work, other than to convert back to windows 98??? I do not have a CDR or Zip Drive. Please send me an email with any advice you can offer me. (dannywilliams@ntlworld.com)Thankyou.

swap the drives, if windows 98 is still on it, if not, install it, backup your vital data to the small hard drive, then fdisk the 40 gig hard drive, put it back to primary master, then install xp from scratch, just upgrading never pays ... and the big hard disk is more than likely way faster than the small disk wich increases the performance of xp.

Is there no other way of getting the drive to work without switching to the big drive and reinstalling though??? What about converting it to NTFS through CMD??? But if that didn't work I would no longer be able to access my hard drive at all back in Windows 98. Can you suggest anything???

I have installed XP several times and each time it gave me a "D" drive that could not be accessed with the same messaged you are getting. Check all of your drive letters and see if you have one that is your 30G drive. My second hard drive is now E drive with the unformated "D" drive partition on it. I do not have more than one partition on my primary "C" drive. I have been unable to find out what this unformated "D" drive is.

It sounds like it gould just bee a corupt file on the secondary HDD. I had that problem to. Try conecting the HDD to a computer that will see the drive and doo a check disk or use Partition Magic 7 and check it for errors.
