Have you use the harddrive before, have you used it on a mac or is it brand new? If you have not used it before, i should recomend you format it, if it has a file table with FAT32. Choose NTFS, cause then you can store bigger files than 4 GB.

If there was data you can install data recovery software on your main drive and run a scan on the external drive. The drive if it had stuff on it has probably converted to a raw file system that cannot be read, usually caused by unplugging the drive without safely ejecting it. Both recovery programs are free and work well depending on the situation.

You can REPAIR the corrupt partition instead of using recovery tools. There are 2 utilities that usually will repair partitions that are listed as RAW.

As Hopperrox stated above, this condition is usually caused by improper removal of the drive. You must always use the safely remove feature by clicking on that icon in the tray be the clock.

Get Easeus partition recovery or testdisk from the links below. If for some reason you are NOT successful in repairing the partition you can always use recovery tools then. DO NOT format at this time.
