My .exe files disappear...

Hi all, This is my problem: From time to time I have one file disappearing. This time was nero.exe. 6 months before it was a def.dat. I couldn't find it in the Recycle Bin. I checked the Norton Antivirus Log file. Nothing. I had to re-install the application again. I suspect the Norton Antivirus. It's more than 3 years old (NAV 2004). Could you think of something else? e.g Registry Cleaner or so?
Thanks P.S. Both nero.exe and def.dat belong to the same app. Is this a coincidence?
