Hello every1!! :D
OK...I was gonna copy a file to a folder in my D:\ drive, and I got an Access is Denied error...after trying some thing with shared folders, I realized that that folder had a square in the Read-only checkbox (in Properties).
I tried unchecking it many times, but each time I went back to Properties the square was there again!! :@
I really need to copy this file to my D:\ drive, I don't really trust the others because they have OS's in them!! :( (u know what I mean...)
What can I do??
Thanx!! ;)

Are you logged in as Administrator or into a user account?

Are you logged in onto a standalone host, or onto a domain which it shares as a client?

Are you logged onto a server which is administered remotely?

Beauty of the high sierra,
and she's looking out for you.

If you look you will see all folders in XP are read only and you cannot change it.

True they are marked readonly but you can still place files there.

This also sounds like a local drive not a network drive or share being d:. That being the case only local file access comes into play.

Is d: ntfs? is it just one folder or all of them? Perhaps d: is owned by one of your OS boots. If so you have run into the same issue of if you install a new disk with XP and you want to access the old xp disks data. You get a access denied.

This is due to the different sids. You can take ownership of the files/folders to solve this issue.

I haven't run into the situation with multiple xp boots accessing the same ntfs partition. I have shared between lots of different OS's but as fat32. New territory.

Correction. They are not marked read only. They are highlighted [shaded] but they don't have a check mark which is really read only.

if you log in as Administrator in safe mode, you can right-click and there should be a permissions tab where you can take ownership of a directory

Dr. Zhivago;
1. I don't use accounts, I just have an administrator.
2. I'm on a network with a router.
3. No, I'm on that same machine.

per;
But I used to be able to work with that drive all my life!! (was that what u said??)

wanderer;
What do u mean with "OS boot"??
How do I "take ownership"??
Do u mean its being owned by another user?? I'm the only one...

Thanx all of u!! ;)

I am just referring to the "read only" part. XP has all folders read only by default.
To take possession rt click the folder-properties-security- and take possession.

What do u mean with "OS boot"??
Multibooting like in two boots of XP

How do I "take ownership"??
Per showed you in the post above

Do u mean its being owned by another user?? I'm the only one...
If booting under a different OS you may have the same name but not the same sid [security identifer]. If the folders are stamped with the sid of one admin account and another admin account as in another OS tries to access it they will get access denied since the sid on the folder doesn't match the user.

As wanderer says, if you are not logged in as administrator for the account being used you will not have a security tab.

So Per
"XP has all folders read only by default."

Do you actually have check marks on the read only???? Or is it just highlighted like mine? Highlighted is not readonly. Only if check marked is it read only.

El-Trucha
No security tab? Is this fat32???

Wanderer-yes they are greyed out with a check mark in them. I can uncheck them but they change back again. I think it has something to do with ntfs security.

1. I'm not multibooting, just one XP.
2. No, it's NTFS.

per;
That checkbox has 3 options, empty, a checkmark, and a big square...

Thanx both of u!! ;)

Is the d: drive an actual hard drive or just a partition on the same hard drive? Do you not have access to the whole drive or just a certain folder? You don't have a security tab on folders if you are using simple file sharing in the folder options.
