Comment:

The words "My Documents" are appearing occasionally on the lower left corner of my screen in the taskbar. Do not know how they are getting there.

When I double left click on it, nothing happens. When I right click and "Close" it, my desktop disappears.

Any ideas on what is causing this and how to cure it?

Thanks

right click on a space anywhere on the screen and select rearrange icons or whatever you wish, see if that does it.

This sounds to me like you have had a previous version of Windows XP installed on your computer and someone has just installed another version of XP over the top of it, in what they thought was a good solution to fixing a problem *tsk tsk*. You see this mostly with so called recovery disks that manufacturers give out.

By doing this it has caused problems, by making a incorrect shortcut on your taskbar relating to a profile that has reminants in your registry and not on your machine so it prouces this 'bug'.

I am not sure wether this is documented or not but I have experienced this problem before. You have 3 choices:
1) Hack out all reminants of this from your registry
2) Fresh Install, format and reinstall. It's for the best.
3) Don't click the button ;)

If I am wrong in my assumption please let me know any recent changes that you have made.

When you mentioned recent changes, I realized that I had activated "Incinerate" from System Mechanic. When removed, the problem went away.

When I tried to open "My Computer" from Windows Explorer, it would not open but then would lock up.

When I picked "End Process" from the window that popped up, it would remove the desktop and I would have to reboot.

Now, all is well.

Thanks to both of you for responding.
