my documents gone after reinstall

About 92% chance they are gone. Yes, there are ways to get all of it back. It usually requires more than the average user to understand. I assume that you mean reinstall in the most extreem sense. If it is very important there are companies that offer to try to get that stuff back. Most of all stop using it in windows until you decide best choice.

http://www.mediarecover.com/software.html seems to work quite well and is not too expensive. You have to remove your HD and slave it on another working machine and you can restore everything from 'My Documents' They have a trial that you can try to see what you can recover from your HD, and then you buy the software and they'll send you a key to retrieve your stuff.
