This is an old problem with known solutions- in some cases at least. The story is simple: Windows Explorer reads the values (user's documents) from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DocFolderPaths key and displays them in the "My Computer" folder. If the user account is an administrative one then all the user's folders are being displayed, if it is a restricted one then only the current user's documents are displayed. What about when the restricted user's documents are not displayed in the "My Computer" folder? In some cases the mentioned key may not have the corresponding value. But if it has it?
I had reformated because of COM+ problems (you can read about them in my other relevant article "http://www.computing.net/answers/dbase/com-errors-a-personal-experience/601.html" and this new problem appeared. I reformated once more (luckily I had not completed my system's setup this time) and... had the same problem again. I have two user accounts (both more me- it is my laptop), the administrated one could see all the user's Documents (along with the "Shared Documents" one of course), the restricted one could see only the shared ones. This wasn't so from the beginning, a Microsoft's recent update or one of the other things that I installed (IE 8, NET.Framework 3.5 SP1 e.t.c.) must have caused this somehow, I don't really believe that it happened two times in a row without a particular reason.
This time I didn't reformated again (I didn't have the courage anyway) but tried to find a solution. I checked the folder's ini file, the registry (I even teased the "Security" and "SAM" keys- not a good idea, I was almost forced to reformat because I wasn't able to enter windows in any way, only copying these files from an alternative position to the C:\Windows\System32\config folder using the Windows XP repair console saved me), nothing. I then started to experiment with several usernames' combilations. I found that the problem occured with a lot of usernames in conjunction with the administrative account's user name. At last I found what was happening exactly: Windows Explorer would display only the documents of the first user account (administrative or not) whose name was the first in alphabetical order in the 'My Computer" folder, it would display those of the second one only if it was an administrative one. Somehow it looks like that Windows Explorer reads only the first entry of the mentioned "DocFoldersPaths" key if the user is a restricted one and of course display it only if it was his own, whereas for an administrator it would normally read and display all the listed user's document folder's in this key.So, as a temporary(?) solution I renamed my accounts so that the restricted one's username is prior to the administrator's one in alphabetical order. This is the only solution that I can propose to those who have the same problem for the moment, especially if it is a recent one (caused perhaps by a Microsoft's recent update or program like IE 8 as I said- of course in some systems, not all of them, God knows why). I would be glad if somebody found where the problem lies and proposed a proper solution.
