My computer won't connect to the network

May 11, 2011 at 09:42:57
Specs: Windows XP
I have plugged it into the modem via ethernet I believe, the other 2 computers are plugged in the exact same way but they work just fine. I have tried different cords, plugged it into different slots, and it still does nothing. It won't show any networks, it won't connect to the internet either.

Two things to check.
1.start...control panel...system...hardware....device manager. Any yellow ! marks?

2. start...all programs....accessories .....communications....new connection wizard.
next...next...setup manually

Some times if the computer is not plugged into to your modem or router during an install of xp it can skip setting up the network.......as it isn't detected

Hope this is of some help

Using the second method you told me about it said that my network should already be configured and when i followed the link it gave me more instructions about pulling up the network connections, I followed these instructions yet no networks have appeared.

Following the first directions you gave me under Other Devices there is a list of things with a yellow questionmark. These are:
Ethernet controller, PCI Device, SM Bus Controller, Video Controller, and Video Controller (VGA Compatable).

Thank you for your help, it was not having the ethernet driver that was not letting it connect, I downloaded a driver to a flash drive and installed it that way, it is now working.

Well I can connect to the internet, but when trying to play games on it, it says that there is a 3d Direct rendering creation error. Not too sure what that means. And its ok that you didn't get back, i figured that part out on my own. but i've downloaded 3 different things and it still says the thing about the error. Any ideas?

I see in your post above that you are missing a few other drivers
SM Bus Controller, Video Controller, and Video Controller (VGA Compatable).

On this forum there are three schools of though.
Go to the manufacture site and get the drivers
Go to a secondary provider and pay for drivers
Or do a search for Driver packs.

I prefer the driver packs. Download...burn to cd. and they are free.
I use the ones that have a program called smart. Checks your hardware and automatically installs any missing drivers.......
There are packs for 98,2000,xp,7 and vista.
