My computer turns on but then turns off?

October 27, 2010 at 14:43:17
Specs: Windows XP
I was using my computer normally when my security, Comando, said my computer was underthreat, so I could clean this threat, I did that, but then it said the computer needed to be restarted for the cleaning process to be compleated, so I did that.
Only, as my computer was restarting, it got past the screen where Windows XP icon loads, and then it turned itself off. It then turned itself on again, and repeats the process of turning off again after the Windows XP icon.

What can I do???? Help, its really stressing me out, and I need to fix it fast.

I've tried pressing F8 repeatedly, it brings up the menu, Ive selected safe mode but it just turns of before it has the chance to load into the actual safe mode.

Thank you to anyone who is kind enough to help.

If you have an xp disk, you could do an XP repair. Do you have a disk?

Before doing a repair install, try tapping F8 & selecting "last good configuration". If that doesn't work, try running FIXMBR & FIXBOOT from the recovery console. If you don't know how, google it.

Sounds to me like the power supply is going south, if you can get another, try swapping it out.

Try removing all PCI cards (except video card if there's one) and then booting up. If it boots up then put them back one at a time untill you find the faulty one.
Also, try a memtest on your RAM, if that is getting faulty it will also cause problems. That will also show if there is enough power from the PSU if the test runs for a length of time.

Some HELP in posting on plus free progs and instructions Cheers

I have the disks, two of them for xp. How do I get them to work? Do I insert them, and press F8 so it comes onto the menu? What do I do?

I dont think its a power surge problem. I reckon its a viruse/etc problem. Because I had a threat appear, and then I did as my antivirus said, clean it, and restart the computer, only my computer couldnt restart because it wont go past the windows xp icon loading, it just turns of and then turns on again attempting to reboot, there are no error messages either.

I looked up the FIXBOOT, but Im afraid to mess up my computer even more than it already is. Im not literate in DOS.
Ive tried the F8 and load thing too, so far no good.
