OS: WinXP
CPU/Ram: Intel P4 1.4 GHz
Comment:

Right-Clicking on My Computer and choosing Properties, shows the following:

processor 1400MHz
585 MHz
512 MB of RAM

What's the 585 MHz all about?
My CPU is a Pentium 4 Centrino 1.4 GHz

The system is a Dell Latitude D600 with a P4 1.4 GHz processor.

Thanks in advance.

1) Get CPU Speed and run it

2) Look at these MS Knowledge Base articles

3) Look at Power Options in the Control Panel. Many new computers (esp. laptops) let you throttle your CPU speed to conserve power and generate less heat.

Intel's SpeedStep is causing my laptop to run at 600 MHz instead of it's hgihest rated speed of 1.4GHz. Csn't find s routine to uninstall SpeedStep. Any suggestions as to how to make this 'mule' into a 'racehorse' again?

System is a Dell Latitude D600
Pentium IIII 1.4 GHz Centrino
512 Mb DDR RAM
BIOS Report CPU speed as 1400MHz/600MHz

Try disabling SpeedStep in the BIOS.

There should be a SpeedStep setting in the BIOS. Change that setting to "Maximum Performance" or "Automatic" this should disable SpeedStep and allow the processor to run at it's full potential.

Hmm. Check your documentation or Dell's website?

I know on Toshiba laptops that are power management options in the control panel. (I can choose between "quite" or "performance" cooling methods or can set my CPU to run at 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100%.)

Also, it is best to keep your computer on a hard, flat surface to make sure it gets adequate heat dissipation. (If the CPU begins to get too hot, the speed will drop to make sure the CPU does not damage itself.)

You don't say wether or not you have a laptop, although I'm assuming you do as all problems with SpeedStep seem to be related to laptops. And boy, are people having trouble with it............

Goto www.google.com and search for DISABLING SPEEDSTEP. There's just too many possible solutions to tap out in here.
