Hello everyone.

I am experiencing a problem with the system properties windows. Whenever I right-click on "My Computer" icon and I try to go to properties it does not show up.

Also when I go to Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>System and I click on that one, the window does not show up. It has been doing this with other sections in the Performance and Maintenance area too.

Finally, I double-click on "My Computer" icon on my desktop which opens a window showing me all of the drives. Here I right-click on the very top left hand corner (on the blue part of the window) to get to the properties of "my computer" and nothing shows up. The window fades a little bit, as if to show a sign a new window will open, but it never shows the properties window.

My main concern is that I want to get to the Advanced tab and click to turn on Automatic Updates for Windows Updates from this properties window.

I already tried switching to classic view and that does not work. I run McAfee every day, and I also have Ad-Aware. I manually downloaded the Windows Updates today, but I want to change the settings to automatic updates.

Thank you very very much for being patient and taking your time to reply. :)

Well, you can turn your updates on and change the settings another way :
Click on the Start button and click Run.
Type in "wupdmgr" This will direct you to http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us or some such similar page. In the upper right corner of the web page you will see whether your Automatic Updates are turned on and can change the time to download and all other settings. As far as the other windows not coming up... are you on an Admin account ? Does your user have access rights ? If yes download a good tweaking program (Maybe somebody else can recomend one - but not TweakUI - it doesn't have the settings... Maybe WinBoost Gold?) but anyway in that program there will be options to enable/disable certain property sheets.

Hi andromeda1, HakrJ, tanya, hello everyone,

It's sounds like a policy might have been created to disable access to System Properties.

In the regestry go to the following locations;

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Look in the right pane for NoPropertiesMyComputer at both locations.

If it exist, double click on it and change the Value from a 1 to a 0.

If you are not comfortable using the registry, I can create a .reg file that will make the changes if the entry exist.

Best Regards,
Mesich

I have the same problem described by andromeda1, but it is somewhat sporadic.

This has been going on for quite a while, and it seems to work for a little while after I've installed a new device driver, but then pretty soon it stops launching again.

The two entries mentioned above by Mesich do not exist in my registry.

Any other suggestions?

best regards,
Phil
