My computer programs won't run

August 26, 2005 at 12:47:53
Specs: Windows XP, PC2700

My computer has been having some problems. I was checking my email and the computer restarted om its own. When it opened back up all the icons on my desktop were gone except my recycle bin and internet explorer. When I try to open a file like Microsoft Word it says: "Works cannot access one or more files it needs to run the Word Processor. The files may have been renamed, deleted or moved. Try reinstalling works, then starting the program again." Then when I try putting in the microsoft Word CD to reinstall it it says: "Error opening installation logfile verify specified log file location exists and is writable" I don't know what that means and I have already did a recovery on the computer, but that did not work either. Does anyone know how to fix it?

You are kind of in no man's land right now. I think you should have use "System Restore" first. Now that you have installed and restored I can't determine which way to go.

I'd say this. If you have data that you need to get out then use maybe a linux type live cd. Copy off the data if it exists.

The way I would go from here is to do a complete system install if you have the OEM restore/recover disk(s). If you only have each CD then it might be more complex. You would have to install the OS then update it then try the applications and update them. Hopefully you didn't get a virus along the way.

Maybe someone has a better plan?

Spy and Adware problem.Start by cleaning that stuff out and then doing a current virus scan. People don't realize how many problems come from spyware trash.
If you need a list of free cleaners post back and I'll send you the links.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks
