My computer all of a sudden has a bunch of problems. First of all where my start bar should be, on the bottom, is not there at all, but rather there is just a grey stripe. Thus to get to my "start" I have to use the key on my computer. However all of my previously used programs and ect are gone. The only thing in there is acess to "all programs" "log off" and "turm off computer". Also when I hit ctrl-alt-delete NOTHING happens. This is just the beginning. Furthermore, I cannot run all of my programs. For example my virus scanners, AIM, windows media player, ect. But I still can use the internet and acess Microsoft Office. When I click on the programs that don't run I get a message saying "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect". I have used online computer scans (ones I dont have to download because if I do they wont start), and also have used Stinger. None of these programs have found any viruses or worms. I have even downloaded a program called "Fixswen", it wont run but I righted clicked and hit install.....this still did Nothing. If anybody could help me out that would be great.

Try start-run-type sfc /scannow,[note space between c and /]. You will need the xp cd. This should repair/replace any deleted/corrupted file. If that doesn't work you may have to do a system repair. Let us know.

Did you install SP2? If so, did problems begin after that? I would run sfc /scannow too.

I would also run a full AV scan, if you can, and download Spybot and Adaware, install, update, and run. Sounds like you have malware on your machine.

I assume this started out of the blue, and that everything ran fine up to them.

Have you tried using a system restore point to a time before all this happened?

AdAware

Spybot

Good point salgolf. Forgot about SP2. Guess we will have to start asking that before we give any advice. rgds

HI first of all I cannot go to "start-run-type sfc /scannow" becasue when i access my start bar there is only the options to acsess "all programs" "log off" and "turm off computer". I do have SP2, and when I downloaded Spybot and Adware and try to run the programs I get the message "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect".

If the problem has started after SP2 installation suggest you uninstall it and wait for the patches that are sure to come.
Start-control panel-add/remove and uninstall sp2. I have had many problems with it, but seem to be in the minority. You might wait for further input.

Try the safe mode. The problem is probably SP2. I had the same problem.

I got the same problem yesterday. I can access Control Panel by use of the internet address bar, but when I got to delete SP2 in Add/Remove Windows Components I get a message saying "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150002)."

I would really appreciate it if someone can figure out the solution to thi mysterious problem.

I have the same problem exactly. Just came up out of the blue (was using a lot of picture files). No task bar, no start menu or button, lots of apps with "application configuration incorrect" messages. Unable to access add/remove windows programs on control panel - get same error message as Matt222. Has anyone come up with the answer yet?

You aren't going to beleive me but I just had this problem too (after installing sp2). but I fixed it (somehow) I brought up the taskmgr (Ctrl+Alt+Del) then new task typed explorer (nothing happened of course) then I opened ie (new task iexplore) closed taskmgr started searching for the same problem and found this site, I popped in the xp disc and opened the taskmgr again (explorer was open under the tasks tab) I clicked on it and windows explorer came up and then all of the sudden my start bar reappeared (my anti-virus was not up to date so I wonder if windows screwed up on that)

Same problems...I can access much of my programs I think because I have not rebooted yet.
I have not installed SP2 yet.

virus scans are clean
cannot run task manager but can run other process managers...nothing out of the ordinary in the list.
Cannot access regedit...can run other registry editors...nothing unusual in the run/ run once/ run services sections.

Cannot run any admin tools....I get "MMC failed to initalize because it was installed incorrectly or because a portion of the registry has become corrupted. Make sure the file Mmcndmgr.dll is registered by running "regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\mmcndmgr.dll".

Try that...next error:

LoadLibrary("C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmcndmgr.dll") failed - This application has failed to start...same as above

Cannot run event viewer...same error(s)

Any new IE windows has hardly any buttons

I have all the good crapware protect me programs, dont surf rotten sites, done use p2p programs, dont open unknown emails, keep all my stuff up to date.
The only reason I did not install sp2 is I need to update the bios first...it is too old.

Have run HJT and see nothing out of the ordinary...either in the regular log file or startup list. I had to use network to view the log file.

Nothing but a few cookies from ad-aware/Spybot.

Yes this was out of the blue....I did not download/install anything new. Have IE security settings high.
Also have updated IE-Spyad, Spywareblaster and run a registry protector. (regprot from diamonds)

Have not run trojan scan yet...doing online virus scan right now.

By reading the above posts...sounds like it gets worse over time or after reboot....

Can access the cmd console...what is the command to list services running?

Do have a couple odd ports listening...

I am really trying to avoid a reboot....till i find out a little more...

Thanks. :)

I never give up!

Well My problem is all fixed up now....

After doing every scan mankind could think of...nothing found infected or remotely suspicious.

Finally decided to back up what I needed then reboot.
Problem got worse...all the icons went "fuzzy" and above programs I mentioned still would not run.
IE was all messed....hardly any buttons...

Tried sfc /scannow...rebooted...got worse

Now no use of the task bar since it is all greyed out. Aly of the icons by clock are all scrunched up.
Login screen looks different...asks for my pw....didnt have one.
Tried Last known good> reboot> got worse...
Tried repair install....got worse

Each time I try something> reboot...it gets worse.
As everyone else described above...I finally could not access anything...in safe/normal windows...under any user name...

Unable to access anything at this point...

Finally I wiped the system...and reloaded all.

Just before I wiped it all I booted to recovery console to see a list of services..

In the list of services that come up on screen....guess...one more time....

Yup You got it...Hacker Defender!!!
Problem with this bug...why nothing finds it...usually packed with <I wont tell ya> Those of you who work this field know...To date AV does not detect the packer. Then all is bundled with another program we think useful.....story goes from there.
All the HD processes are super hidden..can be configured to hide whatever it wants. Grants the hacker full control of your system. You no longer own it.
Sorry...no more details written here...find it on the net.

So....whoever else is reading this and have similar stuff going on...back up your stuff while you can...quit rebooting and get whatever files you can then if ya cant fix it...so what.
If you find HD I dont recommend trying to save the bloody system anyway...with what can remain hidden even after removal of the main program...basically your system is a big back door...

There is not much in the line of hacks/viruses/crapware I cant fix....this I couldnt. Not just the Hacker Defender bug...thats easy to kill (once ya know u have it) But the damage was too nasty and would have taken hours to find whatever scripts or batch files were on there deleting bunches of system files at a time.
Every reboot....another batch of files gone...which is why more symtoms each time.

Ok...I'm rambling too much...as I usually do...leaving it at that.
I doubt most of the problems you are having have anything to do with Service Smack 2
This thing could have been on my system for weeks...glad I dont do shopping/banking online...
HD can hide whatever it is configured to..including open ports, other well known back doors, viruses, legit programs, disk space, reg keys, and the list goes on...

Hope you guys can get things fixed up...

Have a nice day.

I never give up!
