When my computer sits with no browser or anything open, my modem seems to be doing something.I have a firewall but it really doesn't tellme who my modem is talking to or what program is using it. How can i know what program is usingmy modem. Thanks
Marshall

By modem do you mean a 56K dialup? Do you mean that it is automatically dialing into your ISP? If so, either you have some auto-setting that is kicking in every so many minutes to dial up (check your settings/options in the modem screen), OR you have dialer trojan virus that is attempting to dial out to the hacker that dropped it on your harddrive. If so, this is extremely dangerous and you best do something about it immediately.
IF you have high speed internet (cable or DSL), and you see it connecting to an unknown source by itself, it may be the same thing.Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day;
Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime;
Then industry pollutes the water and kills all the fish.

Pay attention to Ranchand's advice. If your firewall isn't telling you where you are dialing out to you need another firewall. Some firewalls only monitor incoming traffic but with all the malware with callhome tags you need a firewall that check both ways. Mozilla's Firefox is a very good firewall and is a free google download. Cheers Stewart
Bit of a wit....half to be precise.

OUCH I goofed here. I meant to say Zone Alarm and not Firefox. must wake up. On the other hand my footer covers such a situation:-)
