Problem with "My Computer" Icon.

First off, I'm not computer illiterate. I fix these things for work, but I'm having a problem I can't fix on my own personal computer.

I'm having an issue whenever I click on the "My Computer" icon, the OS begins to "look" (ie: flashlight) for the icons. This is not a problem involving Windows Imaging Acquisition as I don't have any of the listed devices on the MS site, nor do I even have the service running to begin with. This only happens with this icon.

This is a very mysterious problem I can't seem to rectify or even find the cause. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Does the System icon work in the control panel? If the desktop My Computer icon does not work, you can create a desktop shortcut of the contro; panel's System icon and use it.

1. Right-click an empty area of the desktop and choose "Properties".

2. When the "Display Properties" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click the "Desktop" tab.

3. Click the "Customize Desktop" button.

4. A "Desktop Items" dialog box will appear. Make sure the "General" tab is selected.

5. Choose an icon to change back.

6. Click "Restore Default".

7. Click "OK" on the dialog boxes to close them

Chuck 2: I wish you actually read my post. You would have saved yourself some time. I specifically stated that was NOT the problem.

All: It's not that the icon doesn't work or the link is broken. Let me describe what is happening again.

Whenever I use the "My Computer" icon, be it through Winamp (adding a directory), Explorer, Any drop down box that displays the system directory structure, the computer takes about 30 seconds to "find" the items. In Explorer (not IE), the window shows the flashlight. In programs like Winamp, the program simply freezes until it recieves the directory info. I can often bypass having to use the My Computer icon, but it is really a pain when I know it should be working properly.

Yes, the system icon works. Everything else associated with the My Computer icon works fine, such as the "Properties" and the specialized entries in the right-click list-box.

Note again... this is not a problem with Windows Imaging Acquisition. This causes a 5 minute delay and besides, I don't even have the service running nor any of the listed devices. My cable modem is seperated from my computer by a Router adn not connected by USB anyway.

Do you have any mapped network drives that are disconnected?

No mapped network drives, but I do have some more information that may be related.

I can no longer see my Network Connections in the Show all Connections folder. When I refresh, it tells me the Network Connections service needs to be started, yet it is up and running when I check it. I also found the same type of thing with the Logical Disk Manager. I can no longer use the Disk Manager in the Computer Management Utility.

In addition, Windows Update will not work either. It tells me to be sure a number of services are running, however, when I check them with services.msc, they are enabled and running.

If there were a critical service not running that affects all these, then I would think these services would be disabled too.

On a last note, I have done numerous virus and spy-ware scans. However, this seems to be an configuration issue or maybe even an issue with corrupted system files. However, I can't check them with the XP disk because everytime I boot up with the XP CD, it finished the startup, gives me the screen with the install, repair or exit options for about 10 seconds, then shuts off, hard.

I don't get it. I can usually find these kinds of problems and nail them down, but this is weird.

Try and run System File Checker.

In the Run box type sfc /scannow

I tried to run System File Checker and it tells me to insert my WinXP CD, I comply. It tells me it's the wrong CD. I check it, nope, Win XP Pro. I check MS KB and find out SP2 has some issues with this in pointing to the correct place for the files. I perform their fix... still no luck.

Another issue is I find I cannot manually initiate netman.dll using regsvr32. netshell.dll and netcfgx.dll register fine, but netman.dll will not. So I manually expand the file from the XP disk and replace the one in /Sys32/ and the dll registers. However, upon reboot, same issue.

This is very very odd. My computer has been acting weird like this for only the last couple weeks. I keep it behind my router's firewall and my own software firewall. I have 2 Realtime Virus File checkers as well as run scans.

I also found this in my event log: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AppId\{A434D6BB-090E-4DF6-8B03-AA04A6F58804} opening failed

This was after the AV stopped updating itself and could no longer do it manually. I also suspect it is about the same time all the weirdness started happening, but I can't find any other significant events than:

TraceFileName parameter not located in registry; Default trace file used is .

and

TraceLevel parameter not located in registry; Default trace level used is 32.

as Warnings.

There are so many things that are screwy the deeper I get into it I don't even know where to start anymore.
