My Computer icon changed to unknown applcn.

October 22, 2010 at 22:21:30
Specs: Windows XP
'My computer' icon on my desktop has been changed to an unknown application icon (may be due to a virus). Though when I double click the icon, it works perfectly fine. Also when I open any folder from my hard disk, a yellow folder icon should appear on the toolbar. However, even there I see an unknown application icon. Please tell me what should I do to get my icons back. My PC is free from viruses as of now and I am using Windows XP.

IshanMehta, Right click your Desktop, choose Properties, under the Settings tab change the Color Quality from 32 bit to 16 bit, click Apply/OK then restart your computer. Now go back and change the Color Quality from 16 bit to 32 bit, click Apply/OK then restart your computer. This will rebuild the iconcache.db file and may correct your icon problem.

Yeah it happens to me too. Viruses have the capability of changing program icons and sometimes altering file associations in the registry. Sometimes you'll be surprised to find corrupt associations, or certain files opens with unknown application. Therefore, if you suspect such, you need to run a full scan and make sure you've got it updated to the latest version.
