My computer hangs on reboot

I am running windows xp home edition, I don't run hibernate or standby but I do have the monitor and the hard drives shut down after 15(monitor)and 25 (hard drive) minutes. When I bring the monitor back up after 2 or 3 times my sound goes out, both cd drives stop working (one will open but the other will not), and when I try to reboot it hangs after "system is shutting down". I am at a complete loss what is going on and what do I do about it?

detrekkie, sounds to me like something fails to 'wake up'. Reboot? That'll give Windows a chance to 'clear it's head'. HTH. Ed in Texas.

I do reboot and that's what i'm saying i'll click the restart button to have it reboot, it does everything like it's supposed to do and then stops working after the computer says "system is shutting down"I have to press the button to manually reboot the system, that obviously aint right. Then after reboot the system will work fine for awhile and then after waking the monitor and hard drive after perhaps a third time things stop working.
