Specs: Windows XP
i really hope someone can help me here. my computer took a dump on me and wont start back up everyone tells me to restore it to factory settings but i dont want to lose all my pics, files, music, etc in the process. does anyone know a way of maybe backing up these files before i restore my computer to factory setting? please help

If the computer wont start there is no way you can save your files, you wont even be able to do a factory restore as you need properly functioning hardware to do that.

From your description it looks as if you have a hardware problem and no amount of software is going to fix that. The most likely cause of the problem is the power supply but a little more information on exactly what happens when you try to start the computer would help,

Yep. "took a dump" isn't described in any of the service manuals I've read. You didn't even tell us whether it's a laptop or desktop system, whether brand-name or custombuilt, and as the others have said, exactly what(if anything) happens when you try to start up.

And why are there no backups of your pics & music etc? If indeed the system has crashed it may still possible to save the data as long as the hard drive isn't damaged. You could always remove it and connect to another machine ( there are wrinkles to that process) to retrieve your files.
