Comment:

A couple of days ago my laptop was suddenly ravaged by viruses. I scanned many many times with many many programs and seemed to have removed everything(probably not though). But there was one virus that altered the context menus of all the drives listed when i open My Computer. It no longer contains an Open command but now has 2 items that are in scribble. The anti-virus/spyware programs seem to not see this as an issue. My question is...how do i remove these 2 items and restore the correct items to the list. I have no restore points on this laptop for some reason and the XP cd is erroring out when i try to load it up. What options do I have?
thanks

beebe,
Click Start>Run and copy & paste or type in:

regsvr32 /i shell32

Click OK.

Note that the spacing is important.

If that doesn't correct the problem do the following:

Try the "Drive Association Fix" at the link below.

Thanks for the reply, but neither option corrected the issue. The 'Open' and 'Explore' items in the Context Menu have both been replaced by something from the virus. A scan of the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT>Drive>shellex>ContextMenuHandlers shows nothing out of the ordinary. Is there another place in the registry that could alter the drive context menus?
