If your laptop is in a state where the web browser will not work properly, use a different (working) computer and go here:

You will first need to enter the Part Number to check if an HP Recovery Kit is available for your specific model. This will be printed against the letters p/n on the HP sticker attached to the underside of your laptop, as indicated in the picture on that page.

I'm also in the UK. Can you give a link to the support website you are using
(I'd like to try it out)?

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

You should be able to restore the laptop using the hidden restore partition on your hard drive. Read the link below to learn how to do that.

If you need to recover some personal files you should be able to do that by using a bootable, live version of Linux, like Puppy. You download the file and install it to a flash drive or CDR and boot to it. You can then access the files and copy them to an external source.

Use a flash drive and burn the personal files to CDR or DVDR.

Then restore to factory state. You will need to apply any Windows service packs and updates. Of course you will need to re-install all your third party programs.

See Ch2 pg 10 of the user guide linked below

After you get running again there are many methods and utilities to create an image of your hard drive. Use one of them instead of buying the HP disks.
