Hi all,

For some reason, oftentimes while using my computer for moderate periods of time (maybe a couple of hours), I notice that the clock loses about 30 minutes or so.

I have not found a cause for this. Any ideas? It is a new system, a Dell p4 running XP Home.

Thanks,
Eddie

Nope, the motherboard battery only powers the CMOS chip and keeps it's time correct. When you start your computer, Windows reads the time from this chip and then takes over the job of keeping time. The only reason to suspect your battery would be if the PC was losing time while the PC was turned off.

There is probably a program running in the background that is interfering with Windows ability to keep proper track of the time.

I have the same problem but mine is not soo bad (about 5mins lost and countiing) The clock in the BIOS is also the same slow - even after changing it in the BIOS a week or so back. It is annoying in that regard.
I have a gateway machine P3 running WIN XP pro

Sorry Jason, you are right that the battery powers the cmos chip, but if this is the fault, XP WILL lose time, this has happened on many of my clients PC's and the battery corrects this 99% of the time!

I believe that is only true if it loses time while the PC is turned off. While it's running the battery is not involved at all. Usually this is caused by a problem with advanced power management. See this article:

No, I had the same problem and I fixed it. There is a setting in xp that lets you adjust your time by synchroizing it with the internet, this doesn't work too well, so you can just disable the option by double clicking on the time in the systray and going to the third tab

I had a problem with my Dell 4400/XP Home Ed. losing time too. I searched the Dell help site and found a patch there, no problem since then. Sorry I can't remember just where I found it.
