My cdr drive isnt working

my comp says that my cdr drive is workin etc i uninstalled the driver and istalled it again. but in this case, no effect, still doesnt work at the time i was on windows 2000, so i went to the help and support thing and it told me that my drive may not be compatable with win 2000. so i installed windows xp same thing doesnt work. i put a cd in the drive and the light that tells u if the drive is busy or not flashes once then stops, it happens a few times then the light switches on and of persistantly i do not know what to do!!!!!!! help!!!!!!!!!

Your CD drive uses generic Windows drivers, so I'm not sure what you think you uninstalled and reinstalled.
Frankly, I would suspect that your CD drive no longer works -- they tend to do that, you know...

Simple as ABC...so long as it is detected in the BIOS 1. Clean the drive first.
2. Get a boot/startup disk,try and see if you can browse any CD's directory in from DOS.If you can,windows is your problem.
3. If you can not read from the drive from DOS,forget it the drive has gone south

Hi when i was using windows 98 my CD-R was working then my computer went faulty and didint work. I formatted my computer and installed windows xp pro but in my computer it says that my dvd and cd-r (these are seperate not combo) are just cd-rom how do i get them back as dvd and cdr thanks.
