My CD drive disappeared a few days ago. I haven't been able to figure out a way to get it back. Does anyone have any suggestions?

It's not in my device manager anymore. It doesn't show up anywhere at all. I checked all of the connections, and everything is secure.

Don't know if this will help. Go to TweakUI (if you don't have it, download it from MS), and check My Computer and drives. Be sure there is a check mark in the drive your CD drive uses.

Don't know to do anything else except you might run the troubleshooter command in device manager in the properties of your CD Rom drive.

I deleted the Upper filter earlier, but the lower filter wasn't there.

Magicplayr2000:

If your optical drive disappears from explorer, and it not in the dev mgr too. This is what you do:

1. Check device manager in safemode. If it is listed in safemode the run system restore or uninstall and reinstall the drive from dev mgr and restart. If unresolved

2. Check the BIOS, if it is listed in the BIOS then you are lucky, it means it might be a windows problem. Try to boot from the drive..if you succeed in booting from the drive. The drive is OK, what you need to do @ that point is to repair install XP.

If it is not listed in the BIOS, you need to reseat the drive's IDE cable @ both ends.

Let me know how it goes.

It was listed in safe mode. I uninstalled and reinstalled it, but it didnt show up in normal mode. How would I check my BIOS? This is one of the biggest problems I've tried fixing on my computer by myself, so I've never messed with my BIOS stuff. I'm going to try the safemode thing again.

This is the closest I've come to fixing it so far. Thank you for all the help you've been, along with everyone else who has offered assistance.

If you did see it in safemode, you DO NOT NEED to go into the BIOS anymore.

Just boot up from the XP cd and select windows XP setup from your first option..there is an option to repair but ignore this first repair option.

Then Press F8 to accept the EULA and make sure you XP Installation is highlit on the next window..then you can press R to repair your damaged XP Installation

Goodluck.

Well I went back into safe mode to see if my cd drive was still there, and it doesn't even show up in safe mode now. I haven't done anything to it from last night.

I am having the same problem. No cd drive or burner drive in dev manager, safe mode or in the bios. I reseated the cables too. The lights on the drives go on at startup so I know they work. Any help is appreciated.

SAME EXACT THING HAPPENS TO ME. No one on the internet seems to know what is going on and tons of people are having this problem. People are telling me something is wrong with my hardware, but SOOO many people have this problem. Is this a new virus?

I just got a new CD drive and the new one works. It's definitely worth it just to buy a newer one.

I just lost a huge partition of my hard drive exactly like the descriptions above!
I wonder... does any of you use "emule"? I suspect it may be connected to this...
