I have a Mustek 600 III EP Plus scanner that was working perfectly. My computer crashed and I got another one and now this computer isn"t recognizing it. When I try to scan, I get a box saying " fail load". I thought I might need a new driver, but Mustek no longer even lists this scanner. Anyone have a solution?

What happened to your driver disk that came with the scanner? Google is your friend. Look at the link below.

It appears those links aren't working. Below is another one but the driver may not work in WinXP.

You can also try go to driverguide and see if there are any drivers listed there.

Is this a paralllel port scanner? If so you may need to change some advanced settings for your parallel port. Look at the manual for the scanner to see what type of parallel port is needed.
In the BIOS screens you may need to ENABLE the parallel port as well as set it to one of four or five available choices. ECP,EPP,SPP,ECP+EPP OR NORMAL.

It is a parrallel port. I can't find any place in the manual where it says what kind of parrallel port.( I thought they were all the same?)
Now, after the "fail load" message, I get " Twain error. Error opening data source. Failure due to unknown causes."
As to going into the bios, I don't know the first thing about how to do that.

OtheHill is right.
A search of the web finds your scanner is a Parallel (IEEE1284) connected one.
The parallel port it is connected to on the mboard MUST be in EPP, or EPP/ECP, or ECP mode - usually EPP mode is fine - in your computer's bios Setup. If it is connected to a parallel port card in a slot, that card must be capable of being set to EPP, or EPP/ECP, or ECP mode, and be set to one of those.
You also must be using a parallel cable capable of supporting the IEEE1284 standard, but if it was working fine with the same cable before, it's okay.
If you're not using the same cable, you should see IEEE1284 marked on the cable or cable connectors - if that isn't there it may still work properly (IEEE1284 merely specifies the wires have a minimum wire guage or greater), or it may not.You don't see anything different in Device Manager in Windows if it is in EPP mode.
If it is in ECP mode, it requires a DMA channel be available (it might not be) , and you will have an entry in Device Manager for an ECP Printer port.
This scanner is old enough it probably doesn't require ECP mode in any case.According to this the Mustek FTP site is no longer functional - the drivers here should work fine, IF AND ONLY IF you have the parallel port mode set to EPP, or EPP/ECP, or ECP mode.
http://members.driverguide.com/driv...As a side note, I had no success getting an old parallel connected web cam to work properly with ANY PCI parallel port card in a slot - the only one that worked properly was an ISA multi I/O card with EPP/ECP support.
If you are connecting it to a card in a slot and can't get it to work properly, try the mboard parallel port instead.

You may be prompted via a text message at the bottom of the screen early in the booting of your computer to press xxx to enter Setup, or similar. You press that key while you still see the prompt. If you press it too late, continue onto Windows and then Shut Down Windows and try booting again.
You may only see it when you boot after power off or after having Shut Down Windows (cold boot) - it may not appear when you restart the computer (warm boot).
If you don't see that see the User manual for your Dell model.
If you don't have that get it here:

Thank you, OTheHill and Tubesandwires for your time and explaining exactly what I have to do.
