Hi,

Windows XP will no longer play audio cds. It was working fine the other day when i used it. I have winamp 5.1 and windows media player 10 but they both refuse to play audio cds. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both programs with no luck. Mp3s and other audio files play fine on both players though. I have tried everything i can think of. Winamp plays about 1 second of an audio cd but then crashes with an error message and the details for it are:
AppName: winamp.exe AppVer: 5.0.1.0 ModName: unknown ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00000000

I have tried downgrading both programs to older versions with no luck. The error i get for media player is: "Windows Media Player cannot find the specified file. Be sure the path is typed correctly. If it is, the file does not exist at the specified location, or the computer where the file is stored is offline." even though its from an audio cd!

I have also tried enabling and disabling internet access from these programs but it still doesnt work.

I would appreciate any help on this. Thanks
Ryan

I think you might be having an issue with sony and their proprietary DMA root garbage.
What you describe is along those lines. Have you tried to burn any sony CD's lately?

The issues you are discribing is similar to what happened with the attempt to remove a sony rootkit installation program to stop pirating of their software(music CD's)

If so the repair features within the root files is just to long and people with no registry experienc has no business even tryin the fix.

You may need to try to do a system repair or even reformat and reinstall windows XP...

Good luck!

Reads data disks fine. I have two cd drives and they both experience the same audio cd problem. The drive is clean and well looked after and so are all the disks i have tried.

Any help other than restore windows would be appreciated. It worked fine a few days ago when i last listened to audio cd.

When you say:
but they both refuse to play audio cds.

What or does not happen?
You put the cd in then you ??? What??
Do any error messeges show up. Does it say anything.

Or does it just set there after you put the cd in?

I put the audio cd in either of the drives. Windows XP recognises it as an audio cd and displays the files for the number of audio tracks it contains.

Which ever music software i choose it use to play the audio cd it wont let me listen to the audio tracks. I get the error messages i mentioned above for winamp:

AppName: winamp.exe AppVer: 5.0.1.0 ModName: unknown ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00000000

after it starts trying to play the track for less than 1 second then crashes. It also displays the track length as a few thousand minutes instead of the correct length.

And in Windows Media Player 10 i get:

"Windows Media Player cannot find the specified file. Be sure the path is typed correctly. If it is, the file does not exist at the specified location, or the computer where the file is stored is offline."

As all the tracks on the playlist go orange as if it doesnt recognise them.

It worked fine the other day and i have not removed any cables from inside my PC such as the soundcard to the cd drives. I just dont understand what has caused it to stop playing audio cd music.

I have tried disabling and enabling audio cd music from device manager but i usually have it set to disabled anyway and use winamp which usually works fine.

I fixed it. Daemon Tools is causing some sort of conflict with my cd/dvd drives. I have to have 1 daemon tools drive setup even though i'm not using a mounted cd. Then the audio cd music plays when i insert an audio cd in either of my two proper drives. Strange how its just starting to cause a conflict!?
