Hi.
Since recently I have been having trouble with the CDROM drive in my computer. I tried swapping it out for a DVD ROM drive from another computer and the symptoms were the same.
When I play some music CDs it's stutters. Near the end of the cd it takes like twenty seconds to read 1 second of music.
It only happens with CDs and DVDs that are not in perfect condition. It was suggested that I should gently rub the laser with a cotton swab(non-abbrasive) dipped in rubbing alcohol.
I tried this, it didn't help. I tried playing the music cd that was skipping on the computer in my 17 year-old cheap cd player. It had no trouble whatsoever.
I am consufed beyond belief.
Help.
David.
Side note:
Want to reinstall IE or Windows. Try going to start-->run and type "sfc /scannow". It'll scan files and replace corrupted ones. It'll fix a lot of issues.

David,
Sounds like a bad cable or connection. Try your CD on the other data cable (you may have to switch jumpers from master to slave or vice versa).
A better test would be to put that CD drive in another computer and see if it behaves the same, if so you've solved the mystery, if not it's probably the cable, connection or mobo.
good luck,
wired
