I know a lot of people have had this same problem, but my computer keeps taking anywhere from 5 - 10 min to start up. I have narrowed the problem to down to one file. Mup.sys. This file takes forever to do its work every time i start up. I figured, after all the trouble i have gone through trying to discover a solution to this problem, I would post something that i found to try and help some other people.

I read that Microsoft's update Q311967 replaced the mup.sys file. I don't know if it will work, but here on the computer i have at work, i found the uninstall inf file, so i'm gonna try that. If that doesn't fix it, I am just going to try replacing the file from the XP installation CD.
I know that copying this file mup.sy_ and renaming it will not work, and i saw that someone else who was having this problem tried that. You have to use the microsoft EXPAND utility from a command prompt....
Probably something like:

Expand ***\***\mup.sy_ c:\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys

I am pretty sure that is the folder it belongs in, or it would be c:\WINNT\system32\drivers

Hope that helps someone.
