Multiple sessions open on server for one user

Microsoft Windows server 2003
February 6, 2010 at 05:49:43
Specs: Windows Vista
Random users on wxpsp3 (not vista) have had trouble saving office documents. The message says that another user has the document open however they have not.

Investigating the issue in the windows server 2003 it shows under sessions that the user has two sessions open. One of them idle and the other active. This is possibly why they get the message saying that the document is being used by another user, the user being them in another session. We went virtual a few months ago is it possible a setting is causing this?

no a setting cant cause this kind of fault, have you gone virtual with the XP machines too, or just the servers? the easiest thing you can do is reboot the problem pc/server. this will force the random session to close.

If you have virtulised the XP PC's too it could be that there is a console session and an rdp or other session opened on the same pc, but xp will not combine the sessions, it will build more!

thanks for your reply. It is just the server that has gone virtual. (vmware) The server runs as a file server on Windows 2003.

The problem is persisting, we have tried changing the auto disconnect with no luck.

Recently there were a number of users with multiple sessions . One computer had 18 sessions with 3 users i.e showing 6 sessions each. We carried out a reboot on the server however the problem returned the next day and people are still having files lock up and multiple sessions again.

Any advice is much appreciated.
