Hi everyone,

I have a dell desktop running xp attached to a domain. The user account is Administrator. Everything was flawless last week, but here are some problems now:
- When trying to open a document or spreadsheet, it states "major changes were made to the system...." and prompts to insert the xp office disc. The documents are locked and cannot be edited.
- Attempting to upgrade to the Volume Liscense of Office 2003 states a .CAB file is corrupt and cannot install.
- TCP/IP became corrupt, typing ipconfig in cmd gives an error like it cannot find the service.
- Cannot repair Local area connection
- Cannot suceed at a system restore
- Firewall will not turn ON.

Not sure where all these errors would have came from so suddenly, possible virus? I don't think our volunteer staff has the knowledge or desire to purposely corrupt the system. Any ideas and input would help, Thanks!

A virus most likely, although there are other unlikely things that may cause it.

Is there already an anti-virus program on the PC?

Fact you are in a domain and logging in as administrator shows there is no network security. This would lead me to believe you also have no protection from the internet.

You have all the signs of being infected with malware/spyware/virus's or of being hacked.

Backup your important data asap and get a firewall up between your network and the internet.

Imagine the power of knowing how to internet search

Also, you should never use the administrator account as your daily use account.

Thanks. The guy before had this all setup, I'll run some scans and update back.

It has protection but I believe its out of date. Filtergate is also installed.

The account isnt the admin, it just has the admin access which isnt good either.
