Multiple instances of svchost.exe?

OS: Windows XP Home SP2
CPU/Ram: Pentium 4 2.99 GHz, 512MB
Comment:

When I open my task Manager, I get the following instances of svchost.exe in the processes:

svchost.exe...........SYSTEM
svchost.exe...........LOCAL SERVICE
svchost.exe...........NETWORK SERVICE
svchost.exe...........SYSTEM
svchost.exe...........NETWORK SERVICE
svchost.exe...........SYSTEM

Is this normal?

Yes it's normal for Windows XP. Quoted:

Each instance of Svchost process (you see in Task Manager) launches a list of services. Multiple instances of Svchost.exe can run at the same time. Four or five instances of svchost.exe is normal.

All true processes but note that svchost.exe can also be W32.welchia worm which is a "shut down" problem...always a good idea to occasionalyy run online virus scans.

How do you determine whether or not your svchost.exe is legit? You can easily find out by downloading and running the File Checksum Integrity Verifier (FCIV)utility available from THIS MSKB. The MD5 of a legit XP SP2 Svchost.exe should match this hash values:

8f078ae4ed187aaabc0a305146de6716.
