please can someone help me, i really am in a pickle!!

right i had windows XP installed on to my laptop, Acer TravelMate 242LC.

ive gone to play some music in windows media but message comes up saying no sound hardware.
which before i had windows XP installed everything worked perfectly.

i went to device manager and there is a yellow question mark next to "multimedia audio controller" so through that i tried to re install it but no luck as said it was unable to do so.

i have also gone into control panel-> sounds and audio devices and all screens are frozen but in the hardware section, all that is listed says that they are working properly!

so please can someone advise on what i need to do.

is it right i need a driver, which someone has already told me, so i went to acer website to find this driver but it is not listed.
ive googled searched the words "multimedia audio controller" and also adding in the words "drivers" but had no luck.

in the posts on here, ive not actually seen one that i showing website where to get these drivers, so if anyone knows please let me know!!

any help will be appreciated as i dont have a clue!! (and im getting stressed!! lol)

some info here that may help: (i dont know what they mean!!)

according to this http://support.acerpanam.com/synapse/forms/recordview.cfm?recordid=176&formid=3404&website=AcerPanAm.com&originwebsite=AcerPanAm.com&words=all&keywords=&pupv=pu
your sounds card is Cirrus Logic CS4299-XQ

and this could be your sound card drivers:
http://support.acerpanam.com/synapse/forms/recordview.cfm?recordid=1294&formid=3394&website=AcerPanAm.com&originwebsite=AcerPanAm.com&words=all&keywords=&pupv=pu

It's worth trying since it doesn't work on your PC anyway.
How did you come about that your sound card is 16-bit AC'97 stereo audio with built in wavetable synthesizer? Is that what it says on your spec sheet or in the device manager?

Hey Max10

i got that information in my laptop handbook!!
in device manager, (in which i dont know where to find my sound card!), in the section "sounds, videos and game controllers" these are listed:
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs

when gone to properties for each it says their all working.

does that help??

I want you to right clikc the Legacy Audio Drivers and select disable. then download that driver above and install it. See if that works. Just to be safe - create a system restore point by going to Start and Help and Support. So if something goes wrong you'll be able to roll back.

This feature would be controled by a driver and/or its utilities, so look in there. And if it doesn't work- it doesn't work. You may try however disabling that driver I mentioned before. Reboot if necessary and then try it. If it won't work then it doesn't work. The driver they have has a bug. (make sure you're pressing Fn and not Ctrl key). :)

So I'm having the exact same problem here as well. I have the same hardware and everything, but I'm running this on a desktop computer from Cicero. I as well run on Windows XP, and these are the same controllers I have.
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs
Considering no one else has helped me and Max10 helped someone here, do you think you could possible help me out as well.
